5G vs Wi-Fi 6: What Sets Them Apart?
Introduction
Although both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are cutting-edge technologies in the world of networking, they are fundamentally different. 5G is a cellular network technology, whereas Wi-Fi 6 is a wireless local area network (WLAN) technology. What is 5G?
5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology, succeeding 4G. It offers significantly higher data speeds, increased network capacity, and lower latency. This results in improved mobile experiences for activities like streaming high-definition content, gaming, and web browsing.

Key Differences Between 5G and Wi-Fi 6
The two technologies differ in several areas, including range, speed, latency, reliability, and security.
Range
5G offers broad coverage, especially in outdoor environments, making it ideal for service providers aiming to offer connectivity over large areas. It can cover entire cities or regions, ensuring seamless mobile connectivity for users on the move.
Wi-Fi 6, on the other hand, is designed for localized coverage in buildings, making it better suited for smaller indoor environments like homes, offices, and cafes.
When combined, 5G and Wi-Fi 6 provide both extensive outdoor coverage and reliable indoor connectivity, ensuring a comprehensive network experience.
Speed
In optimal conditions, both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 can deliver gigabit speeds, with 5G reaching up to 20 Gbps and Wi-Fi 6 up to 9.6 Gbps. However, actual speeds can be affected by factors such as infrastructure, interference, and user demand.
5G generally offers faster speeds in outdoor environments, particularly for large-scale applications like campuses and stadiums. Wi-Fi 6 excels in smaller, more localized areas, delivering excellent performance within buildings.
Latency
Both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are designed to offer low latency and reduce network congestion, benefiting real-time applications such as gaming, video conferencing, and IoT.

Wi-Fi 6, with its Target Wake Time technology, reduces congestion by allowing devices to schedule transmissions, resulting in reduced overall network congestion.
Reliability
5G offers both licensed and unlicensed spectrum options, providing more reliable connections and better protection from interference. The CBRS (Citizens Broadband Radio Service) spectrum, in particular, offers private businesses the flexibility of licensed and unlicensed access for improved reliability.
Wi-Fi 6 operates solely on an unlicensed spectrum, which can be more susceptible to interference from nearby networks, potentially causing connectivity issues in some environments.
For applications requiring consistent, uninterrupted communication, 5G is generally the more reliable option.
Security
5G employs end-to-end encryption, advanced authentication mechanisms, and network slicing to provide a secure and private network experience. Network slicing allows for the creation of virtual networks tailored to specific use cases, each with its own set of security policies.
Wi-Fi 6 also incorporates robust security features, such as WPA3 encryption, which provides 256-bit AES encryption to protect data from interception. Enhanced Open security adds encryption to unprotected public Wi-Fi networks, while Protected Management Frames safeguard the network from attacks targeting connection management.
Combining 5G and Wi-Fi 6 for Optimal Connectivity
Both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 are powerful technologies on their own. When used together, they provide exceptional connectivity that is fast, seamless, reliable, and secure. By combining 5G’s wide-area coverage with Wi-Fi 6’s strong performance in localized areas, users can enjoy continuous network access without disruptions.
In areas where users transition between large outdoor spaces and smaller indoor environments, the overlap of 5G and Wi-Fi 6 ensures that network connectivity remains strong and uninterrupted.
